By Stephfon Guidry

Lights up and the curtain rises and the stars come live on stage! Yes that is the Broadway magic that will be captured in the upcoming NBC show SMASH—premieres the day after the Super Bowl. The show features stars like Debra Messing, Emmy Award Winning Actress (the Starter Wife and Will & Grace), as well as American Idol’s Katherine McPhee, Anjelica Huston (Witches) and Jack Davenport and more. SMASH is a behind the scenes look at all the laughs, pitfalls, and drama on and off stage in creating a Broadway musical on the life of Marrilyn Monroe. McPhee is to play a small town girl moving to the big city to pursue her dreams of becoming a star.

Some critics have already made a connection between SMASH and GLEE but the show includes more drama and less music that the latter. SMASH is set in New York and will feature stories about McPhee’s character as well as Messing, playing the lyricist, searching for all the right words to create a Broadway smash hit! Anjelica Huston is featured as the producer and Jack Davenport will shake things up as a ruthless director.  Critic for, Maureen Ryan, spoke candidly about SMASH, “NBC debuts ‘Smash’ Feb. 6, and many critics who’ve seen it (including me) think it’s one of the strongest new shows of the season.” Debra Messing spoke with Access Hollywood describing the show as “sexy and fun and there’s a lot characters to follow. We are shooting it in New York and it is a love letter to the city. We are having a ball!” Katherine McPhee recently shot a cover of Christina Aguilera’s Beautiful to set the mood of her character’s journey on the show. Didn’tTheyDothatonGLEE?  McPhee told Access Hollywood, “It’s very exciting to shoot a video that mirrors the show a little bit. This song is about pursuing dreams and keeping dreams alive.”  Audiences at home will have to wait in line to see NBC’s homage to Broadway with SMASH on February 6, 2012, following the Super Bowl XLVI.
