Balgian Designer hit the New York Fashion Week scene with his renewed and remarkable spring 2014 Collection. I personally am a huge fan of fashions that form outside of the ‘normal’ boxy male shape and Coppens definitely interjects that trend. Times are definitely changing and most males in fashion can appreciate menswear that is inventive but yet still wearable. Tim Coppens use of leather is amazing, the mix of color blocking is genius and the skin exposure will definitely have the bois on trend for spring 2013. New York Fashion Week Menswear Pick – Hood By Air

Designer Shayne Oliver delivered a fresh street collection to New York Fashion Week with Hood By Air for Spring 2014. The Unisex Runway featured his take on street wear and ready-to-wear fashions worn by both sexes. Hood By Air has been one of the most original and balanced brands, this Spring 2014 shows definitely made a huge statement to the industry. Shayne Oliver’s use of color, shape and everyday staples will definitely secure Hood By Air a very interesting future in fashion. Sitting front row was Rap Megastar Kanye West who is rumored to be partnering with the HBA. I personally loved every look, in retrospect to my personal style and what most of my friends would admire. Colorless Runways this Reason!?

glambethannMercedes Benz Fashion Week in New York takes the city by storm with its tantalizing style, opulent couture and runways as far as the eye can see. But on the runway beneath the decadent new duds of next season are the bodies all colorless? Is the fashion industry leaning further away from using models of color on these couture catwalks? Jourdan Dunn (@missjourdandunn) tweeted earlier in the year about not being cast in a Dior show, “I’m normally told I’m cancelled because I’m ‘coloured’ so being cancelled because of my boobs is a minor : )” The mere fact that a top model such as Dunn needs to talk about color should sound the bells.

Former model turned model agency owner, Bethann Hardison authored an open letter  to the fashion world (London, New York, Milan, Paris) talking about this racist global discrimination. Hardison presents a list of the designers with one or no models of color in their shows. Bethan Hardison blasts designers saying “Not accepting another based on the color of their skin is clearly beyond “aesthetic” when it is consistent with the designer’s brand.” She expounds further, “Whether it’s the decision of the designer, stylist or casting director, that decision to use basically all white models, reveals a trait that is unbecoming to modern society.”

Supermodel IMAN, now cosmetics mogul, recently voiced her views to Good Morning America, “I’m not calling any designers racist but the act [of exclusion] itself is racist…There were more models of color on the runway in the 70’s than there are now in 2013.” Iman was joined in the interview by none other than reigning runway diva and supermodel, Naomi Campbell as well as Bethann Hardison. The Council of Fashion Desingers of America (CFDA) sent an email to all designers saying that “The most powerful message is one of diversity.” However sadly it seems designers use and abuse the excuse of “artistic vision” or the “aesthetic of the line”. It is clear that the Diversity Coalition has its work cut out for it and these strong women of color are not going to sit in silence.

Birthed from the religious practice of ‘Shamanism’, designer duo Nicholas and Christopher Kunz unisex spring 2014 Collection was dead on with its origin. The collections combined neutral colors and airy silhouettes made a surprising statement for spring. With more designers going with fitted silhouettes and body forms, it’s refreshing to see the incorporation of loose fitted styles. NewFest 2013 – LGBT Film Festival

Today begins the 25th anniversary of New York’s premier LGBT Film Festival ‘NewFest 2013’. The film festival is also celebrating a second year partnership with Los Angeles Outfest and the Film Society of Lincoln Center. From September 6th through September 11th, NewFest will bring together filmmakers and audiences in the community to give greater visibility and voice to the LGBT experience in film. NewFest features a diverse and compelling collection of narratives, documentaries, short stories and parties by LGBT & allied filmmakers. New York, NY – August 13th, 2013  – This fall HomoCouture will host a red carpet premiere for its new weekly after-work experience at Arabesque New York in Murray Hill. (4 East 36th Street, New York, NY 10016 – Between Fifth and Madison Avenues). The official red carpet premiere is set for Wednesday, September 11th 2013 and will occur every Wednesday through the rest of the year from 7PM till 1AM.

“After-Work Wednesday’s” will feature a modern Moorish setting and music by the infamous DJ MK. There is ABSOLUTELY NO COVER. Guest will indulge in a specially priced selection of North African, Middle Eastern & Mediterranean cuisine, top shelf cocktails, and Hookah served in 6 different flavors.

The parades, music, and spicy foods bring thousands of West Indians, Caribbean Americans and African-Americans from all over the world. Most of you already attend every year, however I have a special event that I know you will not want to miss.

Guinness is hosting the “Live It Up” event on Saturday, August 31st at Sanders Studios in Brooklyn. LVL XIII: Luxury Designer Footwear by Antonio Brown

SHOE_04As the Editor-in-Chief of HomoCouture and a member of the press, it’s very important that I cover the good and the not so great. Last night I was confirmed to attend AM Studios here in NYC for the Launch Expo for LVL XIII, a luxury men’s collection designed by Antonio Brown. I can’t tell you much about the brand; however the preview photos/website definitely caught my attention.

But what a complete waste of an outfit and Cab ride! I coulda had a V8! My routine Monday night of watching Love and Hip Hop Atlanta, was taken away from this misleading coordinator from Blink PR for this event.

I won’t go into the ridiculous details about how this event was unorganized. Nevertheless, I would still like to invite my HC readers to get into some of the LVL XIII Collection! Instead of shopping for your next Giuseppe Zanotti or Balenciaga high-tops, you might want to consider the LVL XIII Collection! Definitely an interesting line of luxury that I would love to add to my own collection! It’s unfortunate that Blink PR missed out on an opportunity to give LVL XIII a just debut, to really showcase what seems to be a great up and coming designer brand. Check them out for yourselves!
