HomoCouture Supports #SpiritDay

HomoCouture supports Spirit Day! Millions of Americans wear purple on Spirit Day as a sign of support for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth and to speak out against bullying. Spirit Day was started in 2010 by teenager Brittany McMillan as a response to the young people who had taken their own lives. Observed annually on October 20, individuals, schools, organizations, corporations, media professionals and celebrities wear purple, which symbolizes spirit on the rainbow flag. Getting involved is easy — participants are asked to simply “go purple” on October 20 as we work to create a world in which LGBT teens are celebrated and accepted for who they are. Roger O’s Baby Turns 2! — “Finding Me: Truth” EXCLUSIVE

By Stephfon Guidry

“I love telling an original unique story. It’s not about the money it’s really the journey of creating something,” words of wisdom from director/writer, Roger S. Omeus Jr. I laughed, I cried, and then I laughed until I cried while attending Finding Me: Truth New York Premiere.  Hearing comments like, “Your first movie inspired me to move to America from Belgium,” reveals an audience member sharing out during the Q&A after watching the Finding Me: Truth. The movie brings a sense of progression in character building and growth in the human condition as the homo- hetero- and bi- sexual love, intimacy, and relationships converge in a three-part friendship that is anything but dull. Director/writer, Roger S. Omeus Jr., spoke candidly about the film in an interview saying, “It’s no longer my baby it’s your baby and it’s unique to you.”

Before the movie began, the tribute to Maurice Murrell was so heartfelt and truthful his performance in the movie brought more joy and life to his legacy. Following the love, sex and relationships of Faybian, Greg, and Amera was more than entertaining it was classic.  Roger revealed that his favorite line from the movie came from Amera, “I hope ya dick falls off and goes to rehab!”  NO SPOILERS but the movie brings the lives of the three characters to points of change and transition, each character must “Find their truth”.  Roger Omeus Jr. says, “I had to be true to these characters.”

Casting in the movie was superb, the director/writer, Roger S. Omeus Jr. gave each member of this cast direction that provided a vibrant array of talents and picture perfect artistry. Up-n-coming rapper, Bry’Nt, cast as Omar, a street smart tough hustler with an attitude and sex appeal, had this to say about his experience with the cast, “They embraced me and I fit right in” The audience felt right at home, the theater was so packed it was standing room only in the back. With so many supporters in one room the reactions were bigger the laughs kept coming and some tearful moments worked the crowd over.

Finding Me Truth is sure to be sold out in stores, as it is now available on DVD — for more info check out http://findingmetruthblog.com/ Faybian must find the truth within him to truly be himself, Greg must find the truth in-between lust and love, while Amera must realize that sometimes the truth is not something you search for but in fact something you have to patiently accept as what’s right in front of you. When asked what advice would he give to future artisans Roger detailed, “You have to be passionate about it”. It’s not easy and once you figure out your passion nurture it. Remember you need tenacity and perseverance.”

“Tyler and Me: A Day I Will Never Forget” – By Nelson Morales Jr.

Nelson Morales Jr., Rutger’s University Student and 2011 Summer intern youth blogger for the GET DOWN PSA and Campaign, shares a personal reflection on the Tyler Clementi tragedy one year later in his article entitled “Tyler and Me: A Day I Will Never Forget”. On September 22, 2010, Nelson was gearing up to celebrate life on his birthday, while a fellow Rutger’s student Tyler chose to end his. Nelson and Tyler will forever share September 22, a day that Nelson will always remember.

GET DOWN is the edgy HIV/AIDS public service announcement campaign that frankly portrays sexually active teens/youth of various sexual identities, who are experimenting with multiple sexual partners, and the consequences they deal with as a result. The GET DOWN PSA BLOG is where people of all ages and backgrounds can share stories, opinions, facts and “newsy bits” about HIV/AIDS related topics in an effort to encourage healthy, productive and positive dialogue and maintain heightened awareness. The GET DOWN PSA BLOG cover not just HIV/AIDS and safe sex, but sexual behavior, identity and the issues here and abroad that affect these areas. Our supporters include Dawn Richard (Dirty Money) and DeMarco Majors (LOGO’s Shirts and Skins) who both starred in the PSA’s.

Here is an Excerpt from Nelson Morales Jr’s Blog Article. For the full Article please Visit the GET DOWN PSA BLOG.

On September 22nd, 2010, I celebrated my 20th birthday while a student at Rutgers University. I sat in my dorm room sorting through the birthday comments I had received on Facebook and doing my Spanish homework. However, what I didn’t realize was that on that same day, first-year Rutgers University student, Tyler Clementi, would take his own life by jumping off of the George Washington Bridge.

During the following week, I saw several Facebook posts from other Rutgers students that there were news reports about a sex tape that was recorded in a Rutgers dorm. I didn’t think much of it; “probably some dumb freshman” was my thought. But in the next couple of days the local and national media started to converge into Rutgers creating a media frenzy and the story started to come to light. The name Tyler Clementi started to appear in the papers and newscasts along with Dharun Ravi and Molly Wei.

The reported story was that Ravi set up a video camera in his room (Tyler Clementi and Dharun Ravi were roommates) and captured Tyler having sex with another guy. The video was apparently streamed online via Molly Wei’s room and promoted on Ravi’s twitter account. It was reported that Tyler felt that he was being bullied because of his sexuality and spoke about the situation with his resident assistant, through the university (Rutgers Housing and possibly through RUPD), and online via a message board from the website Just Us Boys.

My guess is that Tyler was seeking help on his situation but decided to take his own life for the fear that everyone would know he’s gay. One week after my birthday, on September 29th, the police found Tyler’s body north of the George Washington Bridge where he apparently jumped to his death. His death shook the campus and received worldwide attention. I myself was interviewed on WCBS 880 AM, PIX 11, and Telemundo about his death.

What made this case hit so close to home was the fact that the dorm that Ravi and Molly videotaped Tyler in was right across from where I was living. When I was in my afternoon class, I stumbled upon an article from MyCentralJersey.com that stated that the filming incident was recorded in Davidson Hall. I lived in Winkler hall my junior year, which is right across from Davidson residential hall. My friends and I just couldn’t believe it the incident happened on our campus, right next to us. I was surprised that a story that received worldwide attention developed across the street from where I lived……. Click Here for Full Article

#FNO Fashion’s Night Out 2011

By Ibrahim Malik

(FNO) Fashion’s Night Out is fashion’s biggest global party, celebrated by all. Whether you’re a Designer, stylist, celebrity, fashion editor or just a everyday shopper, everyone comes together to celebrate FASHION in all its essence. Essentially FNO is the ULTIMATE shopping experience. American Vogue Editor-in-Chief, Anna Wintour detailed that in 2009 FNO was created to “celebrate fashion, restore consumer confidence, and boost the industry’s economy during the recession”.

My FNO journey began in the Heart of Couture AKA 5th Avenue in NYC. My 1st stop was to see what Karl Lagerfeld was up to over at Fendi and with no disappointments, I enjoyed myself immensely. Like most of the Designers and Retailers that I visited, champagne, cocktails and wine flowed freely, accompanied with Live DJ’s playing the hottest music. The mass crowds took in the Fall 2011 Collections while schmoozing with the many Fashionista’s and Fashion Victims alike.

Fifth Avenue boasted fashions from Fendi, Gant, Ermenegildo Zegna, Diesel, Zara, Elizabeth Arden and Escada. During my tour of 5th Avenue I caught up with upcoming Designer Edixon Valdez and he is launching his S/S 12 Collections on September 14th. So check him out at edixonvaldez.com

Soon after me and a fellow HC contributor Stephfon Guidry headed downtown to the infamous SoHo. The essence of FNO extended past store doors. The city subways were flooded with Fashionista’s, during our ride downtown we met several aspiring designers and stylists and students from the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons. SoHo was a colossal block party. It was literally a street Fashion Show where everyone exposed their personal style and fashions without remorse. I visited Designers and Retailers such as Paul Smith London, Ralph Lauren, Mont Blanc, Jill Stuart, Bloomingdale’s, H&M, Guess by Marciano, & Ben Sherman. It was an amazing night of fashion, cocktails and celebration, and I wish everyone a Happy Fashion Week!

Prop 8 Ruled Unconstitutional in San Francisco

By Katrina Robinson

Thank goodness there’s a place in California that finally realizes that the homosexual marriage ban in unconstitutional.

On Wednesday, August 4, Chief U.S. District Judge Vaughn Walker overturned proposition 8. This ruling could lead to further investigation in the U.S. Supreme Court as to whether or not the proposition is constitutional.

Judge Walker wrote in his 136-page opinion, “Proposition 8 singles out gays and lesbians and legitimates their unequal treatment. Proposition 8 perpetuates the stereotype that gays and lesbians are incapable of forming long-term loving relationships and that gays and lesbians are not good parents.”

But don’t get too excited. The judge wants to decide whether his ruling should be suspended while those who want to can pursue an appeal. Both sides of the argument are to submit written statements by Friday.

Since the ruling has been announced, celebrations have erupted throughout the country. I, for one, heard about the good news through Facebook—looks like social networking actually does come in handy once in a while!
