Bad words used on a BAAD Girl

By Stephfon Guidry

Sticks and stones may break our bones but words can hurt your credibility and consumer sales, as Dutch magazine Jackie is finding out. Jackie magazine decided it was a compliment or maybe just a shocking comment to label international recording Superstar, Rihanna, the “the good girl gone bad is the ultimate n****bitch!” Such a brazenly racist and offensive statement seems out of touch with the progressive times of political correctness, tolerance, and equality.

Jackie, a Dutch fashion magazine, features a section on how to copy & paste a celebrity signature style. Shocking statements focusing on the cutting edge style of Barbados-born beauty, Rihanna from Jackie states: “She has street cred, she has a ghetto ass and she has a golden throat. Rihanna, the good girl gone bad, is the ultimate n***abitch and she displays that gladly–for her that means what’s on can come off.” ( Using strong language like “ghetto” and lude remarks about her throat served as a double edged sword to the magazine as it hit stands and the internet.

The magazines editor-in-chief, Eva Hoekes, issued a public apology and then her letter of immediate resignation from the publication from the resulting backlash. Eva Hoeke gave a very PC unapologetic apology to Parlour magazine saying, “I realize that my first reaction through Twitter, in which I indicated that it was a joke, has been an incomplete description of what me, and also the author of the article, meant. The term ‘niggabitch’ came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress”. Boldly the magazine publisher, Yves Gijrath, spoke candidly saying that there was nothing wrong with the statements made by the magazine and that the statement of apology only undermined the integrity of the former editor-in-chief.

Rihanna says “Talk That Talk” and therefore made her own comments about Jackie on twitter: “”I hope u can read English, because your magazine is a poor representation of the evolution of human rights! I find you disrespectful, and rather desperate!! You ran out of legit, civilized information to print! There are 1000’s of Dutch girls who would love to be recognized for their contributions to your country, you could have given them an article. Instead, u paid to print one degrading an entire race! That’s your contribution to this world! To encourage segregation, to mislead the future leaders to act in the past! You put two words together, with the intent of abasement, which made no sense…”N**** B****”?!….Well with all respect, on behalf of my race, here are my two words for you…F*** YOU!!!” (The Marquee Blog)

The Fannings Cover December Issue of W Magazine

By Melvin Browne

Sisters Dakota and Elle Fanning Cover this Month’s Issue of W Magazine. The Sister Act, dish to W Editors about their careers, personal life, and participation in the fashion industry. Check out the Editorials and Interviews Below:

Elle, since Somewhere, in which you played the only child of a male movie star, you have been very busy: costarring in Super 8, which was a hit this summer, and in We Bought a Zoo, which is in theaters December 23. You’re 13—how has your life changed since Somewhere?
Elle Fanning: After Somewhere came out, people started to recognize me more. Whenever I was walking down the street, they’d be like, “Oh, wow—are you Elle Fanning?” Before Somewhere, they asked me if I was Dakota Fanning, because we looked alike, and I’d say, “No, I’m her younger sister.” And they’d say, “Oh, okay.” But now I think they are starting to realize I’m my own person.

Your first part was playing Dakota as an infant in I Am Sam. In The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, you played the young Cate Blanchett.
I was 9 years old during Benjamin Button. I had to wear a long red wig because [Cate] had red hair in the movie. I remember that. I had a great time on set. The director did a lot of takes, and he would say, “Take 50,” and I would just go do it again. I was only 9, so I thought that was fun.

I know it was your dream to go to Paris, and you were invited to the Chanel couture show in July. Did Paris live up to your expectations?
Oh, yes! When I found out that I was invited to the Chanel show—that was the loudest I’ve ever screamed in my life. That was the best day of my life. It was my first fashion show, and I know every model by name. I go on and look at all the shows. It was just the best experience ever! And, of course, we did some sightseeing. We went to the Eiffel Tower at night. It was sparkling.

Dakota, you just moved to New York from Los Angeles to attend NYU. Why did you decide to go to college?
Dakota Fanning: For the same reasons I wanted to go to a high school: You hear people say, “Oh, when I was in high school” or “When I was in college.” That defines a lot of who people are, and I didn’t want to miss out on that.

Have you always been interested in fashion? How old were you when you did the Marc Jacobs campaign?
I was 12. I was always into fashion because my mom has always been interested in fashion. She majored in fashion merchandising in college, and it’s always been something we have in common. When I did that first campaign for Marc Jacobs, I really wasn’t old enough to wear the clothes. He made all the clothes from the runway in my size. I still have them.

If one of your movies comes on TV, do you watch it? Very few people can see themselves at so many ages.
Watching I Am Sam does feel weird, because it seems like it was yesterday, and yet it feels like a completely different person. If I see a movie on TV that I’m in, I usually will watch it for that reason: It’s like I’m watching another person.
